Adaptive CPM Bidding
Adaptive CPM is an automated bid optimization system for Onsite Display Auction campaigns. Instead of setting separate cost per thousand impressions (CPM) bids for each page type you target, you set a single Max CPM ceiling and the system manages the rest, adjusting bids every few minutes to help your line item hit its daily budget target efficiently.
It introduces two key enhancements to how advertiser campaigns run on your site:
Pacing awareness. The optimizer continuously evaluates how each line item is spending relative to its daily budget and to real-time traffic patterns on your site.
More even spend. Helps campaigns distribute spend more evenly throughout the day. It can reduce early budget exhaustion and help line items remain active during later traffic periods.
Specifications:
Requires a single Max CPM input at the line item level — no per-page-type bid entries.
Requires an end date to be set on the line item.
How It Works
Monitors pacing automatically: Every few minutes, Adaptive CPM compares a line item’s actual spend with its expected spend based on the time of day, remaining budget, and time left to deliver.
Adjusts bids across eligible page types: The controller evaluates page type bid floors, auction conditions, and page type performance signals, then updates bids automatically instead of requiring separate manual CPM adjustments.
Balances placement value with auction participation. For each auction, Adaptive CPM evaluates the placement's expected value and quality, including its view rate. If the impression value is below the placement’s minimum bid floor, the optimizer reduces participation in that auction to limit inefficient spend. It still respects the line item’s Max CPM ceiling.
Supports smoother delivery with less manual work: By continuously adjusting bids and auction participation, Adaptive CPM can help distribute spend more evenly throughout the day. The Max CPM is the highest bid the system will place, not a guarantee of spend or impression volume. Actual delivery depends on auction wins, eligible inventory, and pacing.
Key Monetization Benefits
Healthier auctions and higher fill rates. By pacing advertiser spend more effectively, more line items stay active throughout the day, preventing early budget depletion and ensuring a greater share of your inventory is covered by competing campaigns. The result: fewer unfilled impressions, stronger auction density, and higher effective fill rates, which translate directly to increased CPMs and daily revenue.
Improved shopper experience. Sustained campaign activity throughout the day ensures a more diverse mix of advertisers and products continue to compete. Shoppers see fresher, more relevant ads — improving engagement and the overall quality of your onsite inventory.
More reliable budget delivery. Adaptive CPM automatically raises bids when a line item is falling behind its pacing goals, turning committed advertiser budgets into actualized revenue more reliably. Advertisers that see stronger, more consistent delivery are more likely to sustain and grow their investment in your onsite Display inventory.
Scalable program management. Reducing bid setup to a single Max CPM removes the complexity of managing multiple per-page-type bids — lowering the headcount and ongoing oversight needed to run your Display program efficiently.
Benefits For Your Advertisers
Adaptive CPM gives brands running onsite display auction campaigns on your platform more efficient, lower-effort campaign management:
Smarter pacing and more consistent delivery. Adaptive CPM adjusts bids and auction participation in real time, accelerating spend when a line item is falling behind and throttling when it's ahead. The result is more consistent delivery throughout the day, helping brands reach shoppers during both peak and off-peak periods without burning through budget early.
Better CPM efficiency. Fixed bids can win impressions while quietly overpaying for them. Adaptive CPM calibrates each bid to real-time pacing, current competition, and placement quality — helping brands secure the same quality inventory at a more efficient CPM and improving their return on ad spend.
Reduced operational workload. Managing multiple per-page-type bids, each requiring constant fine-tuning, is replaced by a single Max CPM ceiling. The automation running behind the scenes gives campaign managers hours back each week and that time can be redirected from bid maintenance to strategy.
